4GB Kingston DataTraveler G3 Review

USB memory sticks are hardly the most glamorous of tech gadgets, we all have one of them but we don’t really make a huge deal of fuss about them either. However, there is a surprisingly large amount of variation between most USB 2.0 memory sticks these days in terms of the speed they actually offer. Although USB 2.0 in theory offers 0.5Gb/s of bandwidth which translates into 62.5MB/s in reality the best you can expect to achieve from a USB 2.0 memory stick is somewhere in the region of 30MB/s with most averaging out around the 20MB/s marker.

Today we have a quick look at the 4GB Kingston DataTraveler G3 USB memory stick. Hardly the most glamorous offering from Kingston in terms of storage but it certainly does a good job. Currently the ‘sweet-spot’ of USB storage has moved slightly and is probably now at 8GB but 4GB still offers more than enough storage for those looking to keep some word documents, photos, films or music files on something portable. The average price for the Kingston DataTraveler G3 USB is in the region of £5 so it certainly is well priced and works out at about £1.25 per GB of storage.

Not only is the price attractive but you also know it is made by the memory giant Kingston, whose products are infamous for reliability, backed up by a 5 year warranty…even though most USBs are probably considered ‘out-of-date’ after a 5 year period has elapsed. The Kingston DataTraveler G3 comes in a variety of colours: yellow, orange, white, grey, blue, and red to name but a few of the ones we encountered. The ‘G3′ in the naming represents generation 3 of the USB memory stick design, meaning it is well refined in terms of reliability and performance.

It is also worth noting that the Kingston DataTraveler G3 supports Linux, Windows 7, Vista, XP and Mac OS out of the box with simple ‘plug-n-play’ technology. In the review we would like to cover only a few things:

  • Practicality of Design
  • Value for Money
  • Performance

So without further ado lets kick on with the testing of this product.
