CM Storm Spawn Gaming Mouse Review

The Included Software

As mentioned earlier the included software for the CM Storm Spawn gaming mouse isn’t included in the box. CM Storm have made the software available for free download by anyone at: www.cmstorm.com/en/products/peripherals/spawn/

This way you will always be able to download the latest version of the program when you get your mouse. The system requirements for the Software are 64 or 32bit Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP. Sorry guys, no Linux or OS X support.

The Main Control tab of allows you to change all 5 buttons and 2 click keys to any particular combination you want, including a keyboard key, keyboard macro or just disabling a button altogether. You can also adjust the double click speed, scroll speed and pointer acceleration. Angle snapping is also optional, by enabling this the mouse will try to keep horizontal and vertical lines as straight as possible, almost in a predictive fashion. Personally, I avoid this but whatever floats your boat, it is nice they have included the option for those who many like it. By clicking Apply you automatically bind your settings to the onboard 32kb of Sentinel-X memory.

The Macro tab allows you to name and create your own macros. By selecting new macro, then adding a name you will create a macro. By using the start record you can formulate which particular events will formulate that particular macro, i.e if you are a professional rager like me an Alt + F4 macro sure comes in handy for a friendly game of Battlefield 3.

The third tab includes DPI, pointer and polling rate options. DPI wise, i’d say this section is almost pointless, with 3 DPI steppings and only 3 DPI settings (800, 1800 and 3500) what would be the point of changing any of them around? Some of you may be surprised that there is a rather large jump between 1800 and 3500 DPI, to be honest I am surprised too, a 2400/2500/2600 DPI setting would have been nice for those who find their natural DPI isn’t available here. There is also an option to change your pointer (cursor) speed and the polling rate is also variable between 125Hz to 1000Hz.

The final tab of the software allows you to update your software and drivers as well as access the online support in case you are having trouble with your CM Storm Spawn mouse.

Overall I found the software to be reasonably useful and simple to use, it would be nice to see some macro creation instructions for the more novice users and even nicer to see another DPI setting implemented between 1800 and 3500. Its also worth noting, this may be a problem just with my particular system but, on changing and applying a setting the CM Storm Spawn software normally stops responding for a minute or sometimes stops responding at all. Not the most helpful thing in the world.
